The biggest problem with a solid bait is how do you mount it? The pellets are so hard that you cannot put the bait directly on the hook, so the only options are to drill and hair-rig them, or fix them to the hook using a bait band. Both these tactics have their down sides, as the bait can split when being drilled and a banded particle can slip off on the cast.
The other problem with rock hard pellets is the breakdown time. In cold weather especially, the oils and attractants take a long time to release and so fail to draw fish quickly. Another issue is the initially dark bait can quickly lose its colour and after a short time looks alien to fish in the water.
In a nutshell all these negative factors mean that this ever-popular bait is not as angler friendly as it could be, but as fish love them perseverance is the name of the game.

The best way to describe these new baits is that they are a cross between a hard pellet and a soft expander.

At a recent launch of the bait I saw the baits fished on the feeder, pole up in the water and the big waggler and the pellet stayed put every time. But importantly it’s the right consistency to come off when you hook a fish, and so the hook hold is not impeded.

Once in the water you can see the oil, which is unaffected but water temperature, leech out of the bait as it breaks down, but to appreciate just how rammed with oil each pellet is, a firm squeeze sees it drip off. Also once in the water the bait keeps its colour and so continues to look attractive to fish.
I for one welcome these new baits, as I’m not the greatest when it comes to fishing pellets on commercials and when fishing big donkey chokers on rivers for barbel I get frustrated by the number of baits that split when I drill them.
