Lucas Takes The Club Champs
Barston Lakes hosted the Total-FishingClub.com Championships on Saturday and despite the anglers expecting a tough event in the hot conditions, it produced a really tight match with everyone taking a decent weight to the scales and an average of 37lb.
Top of the pile was Roland Lucas, who drew peg 109 where he weighed in 77-11-0, just over 10lb clear of Coventry’s Lee Taylor in second spot. Roland qualifies to represent the club in the Garbolino Club Angler of the Year Competition.
Owner Nigel Harrhy is delighted at how the West Midland Golf Course venue has bounced back following a problem with KHV a couple of years ago.
He said: “It’s been flat-calm a lot lately and when it’s like that, a 0.2gr float is all you need, with 0.12mm-0.16mm rig line and a size 16 hook. If it gets windy, anything up to a gram can be needed!
“You need to feed two lines, one at 13m, and one feeder line. Normal open end feeder, pellet feeder, or method all work, with soaked micro pellet or groundbait; I have been mixing the two.
“You need to fish pellet at the moment on the pole too. Feed a few soaked micro pellets and a small ball of groundbait each put-in. A 4mm expander pellet on the hook has been best.
“Overall the venue is fishing well, and your main target fish are F1s from 1lb to 2lb, and 2lb bream. There’s always the chance of a bonus carp are between 10 and 20lb, and they may come into the margins now its hot again.”

Records Tumble As England Lose
Match anglers who opted to fish the Sonu Baits Individual Championships at Woodland View instead of watching the England game against Germany were rewarded with some fantastic fishing, with the top five all weighing in over 180lb and no-one less than 90lb.
It was a record breaking match for the Hadley fishery, with two anglers taking over 270lb to the scales topped by Shirley based angling coach Ian Boden, with a new venue record of 285-5-0. Ian drew peg 13 on High Pool where he fished pellets and corn down the edge for carp to 10lb. In an incredible match, second placed angler Ian Wood also broke the venue record with 275-6-0 from Deans Pool.

Head For The River Teme
Reports have been quite sketchy on the form of the River Severn since the season opened on June 16th, but I have heard of chub to 5lb 8oz coming out to stick float and maggot at Pershore, and barbel to nearly 11lb on stick float and casters at Arley.
Down on the lower river Alan’s Fishing Tackle in Worcester advised me to stay off the main river and fish the Teme instead. They recommend the Leogh area, where a caster and hemp feeder approach is accounting for bags of chub up to 60lb and the odd barbel to double figures. Tickets at £5 a day are available from their shop in Malvern Road before fishing.

Tackle Theft For Match Angler
Shirley angler and Total-Fishing member Mark Johnson has been left devastated after losing over £3,000 worth of match fishing gear to tackle thieves.
Mark (32), a regular at Tunnel Barn Farm and Moorlands Farm fisheries, had been competing in the prestigious UK Champs competition but returned home from work on June 24th to find his garage had been forced, despite it being alarmed.
Items stolen include a Rive XT500 seatbox with the black plate underneath missing and containing 300 pole rigs, two Daiwa TDR 3012 reels, a Garbolino rod sleeve containing two Daiwa Tournament 10/11ft feeder rods and a Preston mini float road with a Caldia 2500 reel. Anyone with any information should contact the police or drop me a PM and I will let mark know.

England’s Gold Medal Anglers
In a week of general sporting gloom for England, the country’s match anglers flew the flag proudly by taking gold in the world coarse fishing championships in Spain. It was  a fantastic event for the home nations, with Ireland, Wales and Scotland all finishing in the top six, although outside the medals.
Dave Harrell of Daventry based Match Fishing magazine attended the event and said: “It has been a privilege to watch the well-oiled team in action today, not just on the bank but also from behind where the management team of Mark Addy and Mark Downes were backed up with some tremendous hard work by the likes of Will Raison, Simon Willsmore, Callum Dicks, John Raison, Lee Kerry and several others. Make no mistake, this was a true team job and every single person played a massive part!”

Fish Coming Up At Packington
On Molands Pool at Packington Somers, the hot weather has seen a lot of carp moving on the top and fish to double figures have been caught on floaters such as dog biscuit or popped-up bread.
The skimmers have given the most consistent sport with bream to 3lb in catches to 50lb being taken on feeder-fished chopped worm and caster or pellet feeder with tiny bits of polony or bread punch on the hook.
Plenty of fish are also coming to paste down the near margin and this has been the best tactic for tench to over 5lb. Best pegs are 2–4, 12–16, 31–35, 44–46 and 58–60.
The best match weight of the week on the Meriden complex went to Phil Bird, who drew peg 19 on Little Geary’s in the Saturday Open and put 85-14-0 of F1s on the scales, all taken on the Method with meat or boilies on the hook.

Huge French Carp
Northampton based Craig Murby has banked an incredible 89lb carp from Rainbow Lakes in France.
Known as The Steve Briggs Fish, the huge mirror was caught last January at a then-record 94lb. There’s a picture in this week’s Angler’s Mail.
